When I started this blog in September of 2020, Covid had just begun. None of us knew at that time what was in store for us and the world. It felt daunting.
But God knew what was going on and what would happen.
I felt Him encourage me to start this blog as a reminder for friends and family (and anyone else that came across it) that God was with us. We could have hope as we lived in this changing world!
As you know, it’s still changing.
Lately, I have found myself becoming discouraged. When I’m out running errands, I often see or experience angry, sad people. Watching or reading the news is depressing.
A couple of days ago, during a very discouraging time, God put this hymn on my mind.
HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW
Do you know that hymn? It is based on Matthew 10:29-31.
This is the context: Jesus was sending his disciples out into the world to minister to lost people. He told them they would be like “sheep among wolves.” He went on to tell them not to be afraid of the people they encountered because God, their Father, would be with them.
Verse 20 says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father… So don’t be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
When I feel discouraged now, I find this hymn comforting.
“Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come? Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home? When Jesus is my portion, my constant friend is He. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
“‘Let not your heart be troubled,’ His tender word I hear, and resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
